Selecting the winners
Entries were judged on April 5, 2003 in Chicago. The design staff of the Chicago Tribune, headed by Tony Majeri Jr., selected the winners in each of the nine categories.

About the judges

Tony Majeri, Jr., is senior editor for innovation in the editorial department of the Chicago Tribune. He was named to this position in February 1992. Majeri joined the Tribune in 1970 as creative director for the promotion department. He moved to editorial in 1972 and worked as the senior graphic artist from 1972-74, assistant art director from 1974-80, art director from 1980-84 and associate sports director from 1984-86. He became creative director of the editorial department in 1986. He was named design director in 1988, and held that position until 1992. A graduate of the University of Illinois, Majeri is a founder and former president of the Society of Newspaper Design. He won the outstanding Professional Performance Award from the Chicago Tribune and numerous design awards. Majeri also shared in the 1993 Reneker Management Award, and was nominated for the 1999 Management Award. He has been part of four Pulitzer Prize teams during his years at the Tribune. He also won the Presidents team award in 2001 for his work on the Tribune redesign and in 2002 for the idea and development of a CD-ROM commemorating 9/11.This CD has been nominated for the 2002 public service award in the Pulitzers.
Ted Yee Catherine Nichols is an art director at the Chicago Tribune. She started her career at the Albuquerque Journal where she designed Sunday A1 and features pages. She then moved to the Times of Northwest Indiana where she was Features Design Team Leader for a staff of four. At the Tribune she art directs and designs the Good Eating and TVWeek section covers.
Her work has been recognized by the Society for News Design. She has a bachelor's degree in print journalism from Western Kentucky University. She attended the Poynter Institute's Visual Journalism Fellowship for College Graduates in 1996.
Elaine Melko Jason McKean is a Detroit native and a graduate of Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism. He has been an art director at the Chicago Tribune since August 2002. Before moving to the Windy City, he worked at The Boston Globe for three years. As a freelancer he has collaborated on redesigns of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer Sunday Magazine, and the sports tabloid for Los Tiempos, a newspaper in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Julie Frady
